Planning guide
Digital planner vs paper planner: which one suits you?
By Print Magic StudioX ·
Neither is simply better. They suit different days and different people, and plenty of people use both. Here is what actually differs, point by point.
What a digital planner does better
- Finding pages. A hyperlinked planner jumps to any month, week, day or section in a tap or two. Paper means flicking.
- Mistakes. Erase, undo, move a line to another day with the Lasso. Nothing crossed out.
- More pages when you need them. Duplicate a habit tracker or a notes page as many times as the month needs.
- Carrying it. Hundreds of pages weigh what your tablet weighs, and you already carry that.
- Backups. Your app can back the planner up to iCloud or Google Drive; a paper planner left on a train is gone.
- Reminders. Some planners hand an hour straight to Apple Reminders or Google Calendar. How that works.
- Next year. A download is not reprinted: the All-in-One builds each year's edition again from the same order.
What paper does better
- The feel. Pen on paper has a drag glass does not. A matte screen protector narrows the gap, but does not close it.
- No battery and no notifications. Paper never runs flat and never pings you mid-thought.
- Glanceability. An open paper planner on a desk is always visible; a tablet sleeps.
- Less screen time, if that is something you are trying to cut.
The costs, honestly
A digital planner needs a tablet and a stylus, and a note app such as GoodNotes; if you already own them, the planner itself usually costs less than a paper one. Paper needs nothing else, but a new book every year.
Using both
A PDF planner prints. Some people plan the week digitally and print a daily page for the desk, or the other way round. Printed pages keep their layout, though the links only work on screen. For print-first layouts, the template library has packs sized for A4, US Letter and A5.
If you are trying digital for the first time
Start small: the free Digital Planner Lite on our home page is undated, so you can try the pen and the links before you pick a year. When you want a dated year, see our digital planners.
Quick answers
Is a digital planner worth it?
If you already own a tablet and stylus, usually yes: it costs less than most paper planners, never runs out of pages and jumps to any page in a tap. If you want less screen time or love the feel of paper, paper is the better choice.
Can I print a digital planner?
Yes, it is a PDF, so any page prints. The layout stays the same on paper; only the links stop working.
