How to choose a student digital planner for the 2026–2027 school year

By Print Magic StudioX ·

A student planner has to follow the way your year really runs: terms and semesters, deadlines that bunch up, exams at the end. Five questions sort out which one suits you.

1. Academic year or calendar year?

Where the school year starts in July, August or September, as in North America and the UK, an academic planner starting in summer covers it in one book. Where it starts in January or February, as in New Zealand and Australia, a calendar-year planner from January does the same job. An eighteen-month planner covers a full academic year with the summer either side.

2. Which pages will you use every week?

  • An assignment tracker with due dates, so nothing is found the night before.
  • An exam revision planner that breaks a syllabus into evenings.
  • A class timetable you set up once.
  • Weekly spreads with room for lectures, readings and shifts.
  • A grade or results log, if your course has continuous assessment.

3. Notes in the planner, or in a separate notebook?

Keeping notes in the planner means one file and one tap from your week to your Cornell pages. A separate notebook per subject keeps the planner light and the notes easy to share or export. Both are sound; what matters is deciding before term starts. Cornell paper, with its cue column and summary strip, is a layout many study guides recommend for lecture notes.

4. Portrait or landscape?

Portrait feels like a paper notebook and gives note pages the most lines. Landscape fits two columns of a weekly spread side by side and suits an iPad in a keyboard case. Pick the way you actually hold your tablet in class.

5. How will it reach your calendar?

If your uni timetable lives in Google Calendar or Apple Calendar, look for a planner with hand-off links that put a class or deadline there in one tap. How the calendar links work.

Quick answers

When should a student planner start?

When your school year starts: July to September for most of the northern hemisphere, January or February in New Zealand and Australia. An eighteen-month planner covers a full academic year either way.

Can I take class notes in a digital planner?

Yes. Planners with note paper behind their own tabs, such as Cornell and lecture pages, keep notes one tap from your week. You can also keep a separate notebook per subject in the same app.
